What will happen if I do not have an estate plan?

Without a properly drafted and signed Will, your State will automatically give your stuff to your legal family members -- i.e. legal spouses, parents, children, siblings, aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and so on.  In other words, NOT your partner and NOT your non-biological and non-adopted children. If you want to leave your estate to the people you love, you must put your wishes in writing or they will be considered strangers to you by law.
